Colonel John Carter was born about 1620 at Newgate, London, Middlesex, England and died 10 June 1669 at Corotoman, Lancaster Co, VA.
Emigrated from England on the 10 August 1635 to the Colony of VA on the ship named SAFETY with his brother Thomas Carter. He is said to have been a distinguished English Royalist. He settled in Lancaster County and built a large house, which he named "Corotoman." About three miles from his house, he built a church, known as "Christ Church." He served in the House of Burgesses. He was married five times and had a number of children.
He married Sarah Ludlow. She was born about 1635 at Maiden Bradley, Sussex, England and died 1668 at Corotoman, Lancaster Co, VA. She was the daughter of Gabriel Ludlow and Phyllis.
